Polyphenols help protect blood lipids from oxidative stress.
Polyphenols are naturally occurring antioxidants found in early harvest olives. They help the olive fruit protect itself during growth, and when included in the human diet, they contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress as recognized in established guidance.
Clear process
Heat destroys polyphenols. That’s why we use a high-tech cold extraction method that never exceeds 24°C, preserving the oil’s living nutrients.
The EUROLIVE study (Covas et al., 2006) demonstrated a clear dose-response relationship: the higher the polyphenol content of an olive oil, the greater the increase in HDL ("good") cholesterol and the stronger the protection of blood lipids from oxidative damage.
Harvested weeks before standard oils, when the olives are green and unripe. This yields less oil but captures the highest concentration of phenolic compounds.
On the basis of this evidence, the EU has authorised the health claim: "Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress." The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 20g of olive oil, and the claim applies only to oils containing at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20g.
OLEASTRO contains 481 mg/kg total polyphenols and 9.61 mg hydroxytyrosol derivatives per 20g - nearly double the EU threshold for this claim, independently laboratory-certified.
